Understanding how CBD aids in combating Stress and Anxiety.

 

Everyone experiences stress and anxiety at one time or another. The difference between them is that stress is a response to a threat in a situation. Anxiety is a reaction to the stress.

Whether in good times or bad, most people say that stress interferes at least moderately with their lives. Chronic stress can affect a person’s health, causing symptoms from headaches, high blood pressure, and chest pain to heart palpitations and loss of sleep.

 

Researchers at the University of Nottingham have released a report in 2017 suggesting evidence that CBD can be a relevant treatment for anxiety-related disorders, stating that “…cannabidiol (CBD), the main non-psychotomimetic phytocannabinoid found in Cannabis sativa, reduces anxiety.

 

To briefly review how CBD works on the human body, the endocannabinoid system is a group of specialized fatty acid-based signaling chemicals (think “keys”), their receptors (think “locks”), and the metabolic enzymes that produce and break them down. These endocannabinoid chemical signals act on similar brain and immune cell receptors (CB1 and CB2) using the active compounds found in cannabis – cannabidiol (CBD).

 

CBD exerts several actions in the brain that explain why it could be effective in treating anxiety.

 

To understand how CBD helps in combating stress and anxiety, 5-HT1A is a subtype of the serotonin receptor, which is important because anxiety and depression can sometimes be treated with medications that target the serotonin system. This is why drug companies developed selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). SSRIs work by blocking reabsorption of serotonin in the brain, which increases availability of serotonin in the synaptic space. This helps brain cells transmit more serotonin signals, which can reduce anxiety and boost mood in certain cases.

Similar to SSRIs, CBD may boost signaling through serotonin receptors. In a study, Spanish researchers found that CBD enhances 5-HT1A transmission and may affect serotonin faster than SSRIs. Studies are starting to provide evidence to demonstrate that CBD can improve many commonly reported anxiety-disorder symptoms, including acute stress and anxiety.
